these artworks are for a completed commission for Broomfield hospital in Essex.

The artworks consist of imagery based upon the Essex landscape, and the way which you see a car's headlight, (that would be a subaru in essex by the way ) , beaming along the horizon at night, two huge geometric flares of halogen....ever seen that?

The artworks form a series of landscapes, which are also influenced by the process known as 'movie matte painting', the traditional visual effect used by filmmakers to enhance a film's scene, by painting imagery on glass and placing this glass between the subject and the film camera. These landscapes are split into 'components', such as foregrounds and backgrounds. Subsequently these 'components' will be spread along designated areas of the hospital.

This relates to some family portraits I’m going to take. Are you familiar with those film shots taken from inside a fridge with actors taking something out of it ?! what’s this about? ; the viewer becomes a voyeur to such an extent that we need to keep vigilance from within all white products.

i used to screen print onto A0 paper and fold them into paper planes,i'd like to do a series of fan screen prints; a flat graphic image of an open fan with imagery applied as if a real fan.....another japanese influence, check out my fat jap

matte painting / suit landscapes

Motivated by my interest in the film industry and ‘low-tech’ special effects I am currently working on a series of artworks based upon 'movie matte painting'. These images show this process; the traditional visual effect used by filmmakers to enhance a film’s landscape scene, by painting imagery on glass and placing this glass between the subject and the film camera.

The imagery of the artwork will stem from the above Hollywood technique and also from graphic representations of suited men, which will in turn transform into a ‘landscape’.

Let me explain, the traditional Japanese artists and printers, such as Kuniyoshi, created images of assorted individuals wearing traditional costumes such as the Kimono. The patterns found within the textile graphics and folds of the materials are themselves, in my opinion, the main visual dynamic found in these artworks. Taken out of context, I see these fabric patterns as some kind of landscape.
And so, the patterns found within modern suits, in my artworks, will become some kind of landscapes, a series of mountains perhaps…. who knows?, not too sure myself actually….
